Coral biological data collected from Pocillopora capitata (urn:lsid:marinespecies.org:taxname:289246) and Pocillopora lacera urn:lsid:marinespecies.org:taxname:869579) from field samples of tagged colonies in Pacific Panama from August 2022 to April 2023. The dataset includes demographic information about the tagged colonies (colony number, site of collection, gulf, collection date, corresponding season) as well as measured biological variables (chlorophyll a concentration, symbiont density, surface area, total sample volume).

This study was conducted in the Gulf of Panama (GoP) and the Gulf of Chiriquí (GoC) along the Pacific coast of Panama, where shallow reefs are dominated by Pocillopora corals. Sampling took place at three sites within each gulf near protected islands or archipelagos: Canales de Afuera (7.69594, -81.63292), Granito de Oro (7.59378, -81.71281), and Machete (7.63956, -81.74150) in the GoC; and Contadora (8.63245, -79.02834), Mogo Mogo (8.57442, -79.01646), and Saboga (8.62807, -79.05462) in the GoP.
Pocillopora coral fragments (~3–5 cm in length) were collected via SCUBA from tagged colonies at each site. Sampling was conducted across different oceanographic seasons: during the middle (August 2022) and peak (November 2022) of the rainy season, and toward the end of the dry season (April 2023). Immediately following collection, fragments were flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen and transported to the Naos Marine Laboratories at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama City, Panama. Samples were stored in an ultra-low temperature freezer at -80°C until laboratory processing.
